I’m assuming admission to TMG is included in the $40 LAN admission fee?
admission to the lan covers admission to the expo too. 40 dollars covers everything yes.
The is going to be awesome…
we can defiantly talk about having a L4D tourney just let me know how many people are interested in this and i think we can pull it off. just need to get a serious admin. i think last time we didn’t really have one to cover left 4 dead.
turk
So 80K Sq Ft and only 17K for BYOC? What kind of number are you guys looking for? I see it says hundreds so that makes it 201 in my book.
Found it on the other site. 400 is a good number to start with.
Ah, finally. I missed you guys… did you miss me? *Prolly not
*
Yepper..We are back and at it again!!! GXL still rocking after 8 years in the LAN!!
Glad to see you guys back. My Clan (Team RIP) has attended (2) of your previous events. One of of which was the first LAN I ever attended. The 512 Man LAN back in 2003 I think it was.
Any chance you would consider doing a COD:BO tournament. If so can it be anything BUT S&D. You are already going to be doing a CS S&D Tournament.
Well looks like my group will be attending. Would like some info though since I have guys flying in. Can you give us a few hotel options. Do you have any giving you a group rate?
Is there a group discount for the LAN if a bunch of us register? Or is it $40 each regardless of how many?
I did get a reply back via Facebook. “the TMG staff have something in the works as far as hotel deals. more to follow soon.”
But we still need to hear something official please. Like I said I have guys flying in for this. One already booked his flight & paid for his spot. Hes coming in from TX. I have another one flying in from Vegas. And a bunch of driving down from Upstate NY, NYC area, & a couple of other states.
Thanks
Currently we are letting TMG handle everything with getting rates for rooms. we will post that information shortly…. i do know that there are about 30 rooms set aside at the Hampton Inn and the rate is about 100 dollars. Just make sure you mention the Too Many Games Convention. i will keep you guys updated on this as i get more info. Thanks for you patience
Thanks for the update. I’ve posted a couple of things on their facebook page but hadnt heard too much back from them.
Do you know if the LAN will have different hours then the expo? I see on the toomanygames site they list the expo from 10 AM till 6pm. Are these the same for the LAN?
Also what day(s) will the tournaments be ran? I have a couple of guys flying in that wont be getting to Phily till Fri afternoon.
Thanks
Actually the best question is where are the Forums? Seems like with an event set in stone the organization and info should be handled like it was on the old site. Posting questions in a comment section seems a bit dumb.
Agreed Zeos.
Yes they really need to put one up so we can communicate.
My current thought was that the forums were really never used for anything but to reply to posts that were made by staff…. so we did not see a need for them… They usually never get used until we announce a lan party either…. Weighing those to items and the fact that it takes us way too much overhead to manage and run we decided that it was easier just to forgo the forums.
If the community really wants to put forums back up, we can. I just see it as a waste of resources. Doubling up on stuff like Facebook it just seems like wasted effort and we don’t have the resources to dedicate to moderating and administering them. Lemme know how you guys feel about it and maybe we can get some dedicated GXL vets to moderate and administer new forums.
Thanks
Turk
Turk, if you want, I can setup a forums and run it on my hardware. Works for me, just let me know.
any nj events
Doesn’t look like NJ will be on any venues.
K more questions
Whats the limits on PC specs (Monitor Size, Power Supply Limits, etc…) I read through the FAQ but Im hoping its a bit outdated since it list monitors as 19″ or smaller.
Thanks
so this used to be a big problem however we have started not caring too much about this strict rule because alot of the time the gamer usually is not pulling that many amps… we usually have 6 gamers per 20 amp circuit so the rule of thumb is that if you pull more than 2 amps i would say you are doing something wrong… another thing to consider is that we seat 3 gamers per 8 foot table and if your footprint takes up more than that space allotted then you need to buy another seat. Hope this helps
Perfect was hoping that was the case.
Can you answer the other question(s) I posted in one of my earlier comments.
The lan party will be 24-7 45 hours.
the tournaments will most likely be on Saturday…. stay tuned for more info on the schedule.
Holy crap, haven’t been to GXL in years and now you guys are LOCAL?! Hrm, hard to avoid now. Just gotta talk some friends into coming with.
I haven’t played it in forever but how about a couple games of BF2 since BF3 is coming out this fall. I don’t even remember if there was a LAN mode or not though. I might still have my old disc in the basement somewhere
My two cents worth.
The last couple GXL events have been disappointing. The organizing committee has been lacking and unprepared. Ideas get brushed aside. Meeting get postponed or they never happen. There is no follow up to discussions. I was embarrassed after being requested to ask an esteemed colleague to join us on the committee and the meeting never happened. WTF. One person wants to be boss of nothing, then make all decisions off line.
I am still undecided if I am going to take my sons and go. Last time I volunteered and donated hundreds of dollars of print material (Posters, color copies) and shipping costs, I still had to pay for my sons and myself after being told it would be waived. It is still a long drive and two nights of hotel stay. Gas, hotel bills, and food is expensive.
I am sorry you feel this way Moranga. The GXL is a volunteer org that allows the community to come together and provide a venue for this gaming community to share and have fun. While i do admit that the organization and planning of this event does get very out of control sometimes i believe that it is something that has to move and operate to fit our volunteers schedules… as well most of the discussions that are had for event ideas and gxl planning are not even made in our online skype/vent meetings. alot of the effort comes from the communication between all of our community, staff, and volunteers allowing our event to spawn a solid gaming community.
I try to make sure that everyone has a say and voice and im sure that sometimes people get lost and voices do not get heard and for that i am truly sorry.
As for volunteers paying for the event… well it is just something that everyone has to chip in for. it has been a long standing rule that everyone that attends the gxl….. EVERYONE pays for entrance. the 40 dollars that is paid gets used mostly for the venue rental and payment to other rental companies for the use of stage equipment, lighting, tables etc. in the end the money is squeezed and used till its every last dropped has been obtained to deliver the most and best that we can for everyone. I can understand your frustration because i myself spend 1,000′s of dollars marketing for this event and alot of times never see any money come back, but it goes for a good cause. Just this weekend alone i spent $2,000+ to drive up to PAX east deliver a 35 switch cisco network to the PAX east staff for FREE so that the GXL has a place in their community for recognition and marketing endeavors.
I am sorry to rant about such things at this point, but i hope that you can work out your issues with us and the GXL and see what it is that you would like to see happen at our event. I am sure that as a member of the community we can work together to make great things happen.
wow you deleted my post
sorry for the confusion, but our wordpress website system does not allow every post to be posted automatically. it has to be approved first by an admin. Primarily myself or Dampfire. Again sorry for the confusion i just got the email now as i was laying down to sleep so i got up to approve your message for posting.
Thanks
I noticed you are hosting a Smash Brothers tournament. Will there be a Melee (gamecube) event?
While we will have that game on hand and there will be platforms to play it on. Running a tourney is entirely up to the number of attendees that enter into such an event. I guess what i am saying is we can absolutely have a melee tourney just not sure how many people are going to sign up. Usually our tournaments depend entirely on our attendees and what they wanna play…. we usually pick the more popular games , if we get alot of people that wanna play that then sure we will do it.
Your welcome for me getting e-Rev too. It seems you have everything under your control. GL with the future GXL. Please take me off the GXL planning committee and volunteer list.
Is there an official CS:S tournament? I play ESEA-invite/CEVO-pro and there have been talks about attending GXL, but I haven’t seen anywhere that a CSS tournament is official. I would attend for a tournament, as would my team so please let me know
the gxl is having a CS:Source tourney…. that is actually the only tourney that we always do. IT’s kinda written in stone. We have had a CS tournament since thegxl’s inception back in 2004.
I notice Quake 3 in the BYOC tourny list. What game types? I think 5v5 CTF and a duel tourny would be sufficient. Maybe we could have an official Q3 tourny as well.
CTF 5v5 has been the most popular in the past otherwise rocket arena 1v1.
Hey Turkey,
Just wanted to express my opinion of my first ever LAN. As there doesn’t seem to be any kind of forums or contact option I’m going with this comment…
Attended GXL TMG over the weekend and I had a lot of fun. That said, there were a LOT of things that I KNOW could have been handled better. I understand you guys get swamped with things to do, but honestly most of it goes into the planning of the event.
1. Registration – LAN was supposed to start at 5PM and myself and others were in line just to get in the door past 7PM. We paid $40 and it sucks to sit outside. In the future, I suggest some sort of online form to fill out in terms of what you are bringing into the LAN. I understand (and am grateful) that you guys are trying to beef security, but honestly the photo prints were horrid and completely pointless. The IDs didn’t even have our real names on them. This process seemed much slower than it should have been.
2. Tournament Organization – Most tournaments started at least an hour late, or didn’t happen at all. Some of this is lack of interest, but a lot of it is simply disorganization. My suggestion: print off a sign-up sheet for each tournament and have them on a table (or tables) off to the side of the LAN. Once people get situated inside, they can go over and sign up by hand and add their names to the lists. This gives you guys a great idea of who is interested in what, and how many people you have. When a tournament is supposed to start, you start it. I don’t understand why “sign-ups” were starting a half hour after the tournament start time. Also, some way to suggest games to play (other than commenting on a post) would be nice.
3. Communication – I know you guys were trying hard but sometimes it seemed like this area was really lacking. It was really hard to hear the microphone from anywhere except right by the stage. Also, if a tournament didn’t start on time it was difficult to find out when (or if) it was going to, and who was running it. Communication wasn’t that bad honestly.
4. Ace of Spades??? Some of the smaller tournaments we were just told the prize was “uh I dunno if there is one, you get into Ace of Spades though”. This is especially disappointing if the Ace of Spades never happens.
5. Prizes – Was there any rhyme or reason to the order of people getting to choose prizes? I personally am not one of these people but getting last pick seemingly at random would have kinda sucked. Just curious…
6. ASK THE COMMUNITY – I was really disappointed that we didn’t have a Brawl tournament simply because “TMG was unable to acquire a Wii” (aside: really?!). There were like 300 people there and I’m sure plenty of folks (myself included) would be happy to bring consoles/controllers/games/etc. if we know ahead of time that these items are in need.
I want to be clear, I had a really fun time at the GXL and I would most likely attend another one in the future. I’m not trying to gripe and complain, I just want to improve the LAN for the future. Smoother events are going to attract more people.
Thanks for your input…. most of your comments were things that i was already aware of myself and was similarly disappointed that we could not get these items fixed…. Usually we do good with those items that you mentioned. ie tournaments happening and the ace of spades…
I guess the biggest thing that contributed to most of the issues was that we lacked alot of staff this year in certain areas that we usally do not lack in…
let me first say that all of our staff did a GREAT JOB and i love every one of them, however this year i had alot of staff members back out at the last minute and it really effected our event as most people might have noticed.
I hope to build out a more solid staff/volunteer base and the biggest complaint/gripe that i have is i really need to get someone that i can work with that can organize the volunteer base. i had a hard time delegating jobs out to others this year because #1 we just didnt have people to do the jobs or #2 i did not have someone to manage and communicate to the force of people that were willing to help.
so i guess as a direct response to your post i want to take this opportunity to ask the community. Would anyone want to help manage volunteers? Maybe try and get an army of volunteers together? Anyway. We always try and make every event better and we will strive for excellence. please keep the dialog flowing and lets keeping reaching for the stars and the best lan party ever!!!
